Soderberg hat trick carries Avs by Leafs

TORONTO (AP) The Colorado Avalanche caught the Toronto Maple Leafs in a lull and took full advantage.

Carl Soderberg had his first career hat trick and the Avalanche defeated the Maple Leafs 6-3 on Monday night.

Gabriel Landeskog, Mikko Rantanen and Matt Calvert also scored for Colorado, which had lost nine of its last 10 games overall (1-7-2), and seven straight in regulation on the road.


Van Riemsdyk nets 3 as Flyers down Wild

PHILADELPHIA (AP) A pep talk by new coach Scott Gordon has helped turn James van Riemsdyk's game around.

Van Riemsdyk recorded a hat trick, and Nolan Patrick had two goals and two assists to lead the Philadelphia Flyers to a 7-4 victory over the Minnesota Wild on Monday night.


Blues top Caps for 1st 3-game win streak

WASHINGTON (AP) Three's a relief for the St. Louis Blues.

Thanks to three goals in under five minutes, St. Louis beat the defending Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals 4-1 Monday night to put together its first three-game winning streak of the season.


Petry's OT goal lifts Habs over Bruins

BOSTON (AP) Somewhere along the way, Canadiens defenseman Jeff Petry must have learned a little baseball, too.

The son of major league pitcher Dan Petry scored the game-winner just 15 seconds into overtime on Monday night, batting the puck out of the air and past Tuukka Rask to give Montreal a 3-2 victory over the Boston Bruins.


Devils score 8 in wild win over Chicago

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) The New Jersey Devils' highest-scoring game of the season came on a night the Chicago Blackhawks may have played one of their worst games.

Kyle Palmieri and Blake Coleman each scored twice, and the Devils rode a five-goal second period to an 8-5 victory over the struggling Blackhawks on Monday night.


Lucic, Kassian lift Oilers past Sabres

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) Two players mired in major scoring slumps provided plenty of offense for the Edmonton Oilers on Monday.

Milan Lucic and Zack Kassian each scored a pair of goals as the Oilers defeated the Buffalo Sabres 7-2.


Stars send Shore to Ducks for Cogliano

FRISCO, Texas (AP) The Dallas Stars acquired Andrew Cogliano from the Anaheim Ducks on Monday for Devin Shore in a swap of low-scoring veteran forwards on two frustrated teams.

The 31-year-old Cogliano has just three goals and eight assists in 46 games this season after scoring just his second goal in three months Sunday night in the Ducks' overtime loss at Winnipeg. The loss was Anaheim's 11th consecutive defeat, extending the longest skid in franchise history.


Sharks give F Sorensen 2-year extension

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) The San Jose Sharks have re-signed forward Marcus Sorensen to a two-year contract extension.

The deal finalized Monday keeps Sorensen under contract through the 2020-21 season.


Defender Gorges retires after 13 seasons

Josh Gorges is retiring after 13 years in the NHL, having twice reached the Eastern Conference finals with the Montreal Canadiens.

The 34-year-old defenseman announced his decision Monday through the NHL Players' Association.


Islanders knock off NHL-best Lightning

NEW YORK (AP) One day after a tough loss to their crosstown rivals, the New York Islanders bounced back with a big win against the league-best Tampa Bay Lightning.

Casey Cizikas and Cal Clutterbuck each had a goal and an assist, Thomas Greiss stopped 38 shots, and the Islanders beat the Lightning 5-1 Sunday night.
