Kings sweep Canucks in China

BEIJING (AP) The Los Angeles Kings beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-3 in a shootout to win both of the NHL's first preseason games in China.

Saturday's game in Beijing caps a push by the National Hockey League to popularize the sport in China ahead of the country's hosting of the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Game MVP Jake Muzzin opened the scoring for the Kings in the first period.

Caps' Wilson banned for 2 in preseason

NEW YORK (AP) Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson has been suspended by the NHL for two preseason games for interference against St. Louis Blues forward Robert Thomas.

In the third period on Friday, Wilson hit Thomas, a Blues first-round draft pick who scored two goals, into the boards. Dmitrij Jaskin took exception and fought Wilson.

Red Wings make debut in new arena

Detroit Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard crouched in net and gazed up at the largest videoboard in the NHL.

"I caught myself a couple of times, especially in the first and halfway through the third, watching on the big screen," Howard said. "I got to remind myself that there's actually a game going on in front of me."

Frk, Nielsen lift Red Wings over Bruins

DETROIT (AP) Martin Frk and Frans Nielsen scored two goals each to lift the Detroit Red Wings to a 5-1 win over the Boston Bruins in an NHL preseason game Saturday night.

Darren Helm also scored for the Red Wings, who got a 19-save performance from Jimmy Howard.

Devils hold tryouts for emergency goalie

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) Steven Porzio's father was a New York Rangers fan, but he always rooted for the New Jersey Devils. A goaltender himself, Porzio was struck by Martin Brodeur, and he dreamed of replacing the NHL's career wins leader when his days at the Prudential Center were done.

Porzio is now 27 years old and working in information technology, and he's given up hope of replacing Brodeur.

Olympic team rules out having prospects

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) General manager Jim Johannson ruled out the possibility of the U.S. men's hockey team having NHL draft-eligible prospects competing at the Winter Olympics in February.

Johannson told The Associated Press on Thursday he doesn't view anyone from the 18-and-younger pool of prospects capable of cracking the projected lineup of non-NHL players, many of whom are opening this season on teams in Europe.

Blues F Steen injures hand, out for camp

ST. LOUIS (AP) St. Louis Blues forward Alexander Steen will miss the rest of training camp after suffering a left hand injury in the team's first preseason game.

The 33-year-old Steen was hurt against Dallas on Tuesday night and will be re-evaluated in three weeks. He is entering his 10th season with the Blues and coming off a year in which he had 16 goals and 35 assists in 76 regular-season games.

Devils' Boyle has cancer, hopes to play

Brian Boyle hopes to play hockey again soon after being diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia, a type of bone-marrow cancer that the New Jersey Devils' team doctor said can largely be treated with medication.

The 32-year-old forward was diagnosed with CML after bloodwork at the start of training camp showed irregularities from last season. Boyle said based on what team doctor Michael Farber and others have told him, he expects to live his life under normal conditions.

Sanford injures shoulder, out 5-6 months

ST. LOUIS (AP) St. Louis Blues forward Zach Sanford will undergo surgery and miss 5-6 months of action after dislocating his left shoulder during training camp.

Blues general manager Doug Armstrong announced the injury on Tuesday. He also said defenseman Jay Bouwmeester has a left ankle fracture and will be re-evaluated in three weeks.

Preds tab Josi captain to replace Fisher

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) General manager David Poile and coach Peter Laviolette noticed how the Predators picked defenseman Roman Josi to drive a sword into the field before the NFL's Tennessee Titans' home opener with the NHL team serving an honorary role pregame.

Seeing what Josi's teammates decided made selecting the Predators' eighth captain in franchise history that much easier.
